Jeff Lasman reported on a newly acquired book: Red Hat 8 Bible , by Christopher Negus  author of previous versions, which he has found to be a very good reference to many of the new features in Red Hat –8.  He picked it up at the Borders store while in L. A. recently for about $35.00.  List price is around $50.00.  Borders is now teamed with amazon.com for on-line ordering.

Also discussed was a book by  Michael Kosta Loukides, Andy Oram, Mike Loukides, Andrew Oram titled Programming With Gnu Software (Nutshell Handbook) available at Amazon for about  $40.00.  An Amazon review of the book says it ”provides an overview of how C and C++ programmers can use some of these tools: the source-code editor Emacs, the gcc compiler, gdb debugger, gprof profiler, and the RCS version-control system.  The book offers a quick-paced tutorial that, unlike some introductions to Unix tools, is particularly focused on the needs of C programmers.”

Jeff also mentioned the Epson C62 which is supported in Linux OS environments by GIMP-Print 4.2.2 or newer (use it as a C60 with older GIMP-Print versions). The output quality is excellent, nearly as good as the quality of the Epson Stylus Photo (6-ink) printers.  More information can be found at:  linuxprinting.org

The next meeting will be Jan 11th, 2003.
