MEETING MINUTES:
August 11th

Members  attending the meeting included:   Richard Foerster,  Alan Shoemaker, Don Evinger, Isaac Saldana , Mac Shaver, and  Klaus Herzog.

New members, Ossil Macavinta, Dana Rodden Dick Mathews, Mark DiNicolai and Karl Pomroy  were unable to make the meeting.    Also missing at this meeting were Dave Reisz, Hung Nguyen, Forrest Sherman, Kandy Phan,  Ken Howells, Tad Peters, and Craig Carignan.

Alan made a report on the current Mandrake products that are
now shipping.  He said, MandrakeSoft is now offering an OEM
version, similar to the 7 CD retail boxed set called the
Powerpak, for system builders.  Also there are two different
retail Powerpack boxed sets, one packaged and sold in Europe
and on the MandrakeSoft web site.  The other is packaged and
sold in the USA by Macmillan.  Mandrake is also offering the
Mandrake Security Firewall which is based on 7.2 and
incorporates Bastille technology for the Firewall.

Alan also mentioned that Mandrake has released Freq #2, which
is based on a snapshot of the Cooker on about June 19th. It
is available on CD for $7.50 per CD + $10.00 SH, & D ($25).
There is also a new Power Pack, called the Power Pack
Subscription, which provides 8.0 now plus 8.1 and 8.2 CDs
when released; all for $129.00 plus $50 for SH & D.

Isaac mentioned two projects that he has been working on recently.  One is Secure NFS, and the other A-POP.  He also mentioned that he has been working with IP Filters, which closes all ports above 1024 and then allows authenticated connections to open specific ports.   A point of aggravation Isaac discussed that gcc compatibility issues that developed after Red Hat released 7.0.  Now Mandrake 8.0 has also changed to the newer gcc 2.96  {soon to be ver: 3.0} which mean a lot of nit-picking rewrites of existing program.

Mac and Don pitched a couple of sources used to locate low cost parts: http://www.hitechcafe.com/eShop/default.asp   …home of Louie the Liquidator, is great for cheep replacements parts and upgrades.  Another: http://www.computergate.com/cgi-bin/start   and the old stand by: http://www.netseller.com  …which has the added advantage of being located building "G" 7207 Arlington Ave Riverside, Ca. 92503.   Of course it never hurts to check http://www.pricewatch.com before shopping around.

The meeting was a great success, and we are all looking forward to our next session on September 8 , 2001
