MEETING MINUTES:
July 14th

Members  attending the meeting included:   Richard Foerster,  Alan Shoemaker, Don Evinger, , Mac Shaver, and  Klaus Herzog.

New members, Ossil Macavinta, Dana Rodden Dick Mathews, Mark DiNicolai and Karl Pomroy  were unable to make the meeting.    Also missing at this meeting were Dave Reisz, Hung Nguyen, Forrest Sherman, Kandy Phan,  Ken Howells, Tad Peters, Isaac Saldana, and Craig Carignan.

Alan reported that he had attended OCLUG after our last meeting.  He said that the group meets on the 6th floor of the Science Building at Cal State Fullerton, from 10:00am to 3:00pm.  At this meeting there were two presentations scheduled; one by Tod Lions of Mandrakesoft on LDAP, and the the other one was canceled at the last minute.  Alan said that 35 - 50 people were present, many of whom brought their systems and connected to the T-1 and 16-port switch that was available for their use.

Alan also mentioned that he was pleased to discover that his Microsoft Digital Sound system was auto-configured in Mandrake 8.0 {as it was in mandrake 7.2} and works without having to install a sound card.

In a discussion about some of the new features in the 2.4 kernel,  it was noted that a fully journaled file system (available in 2.4.1 of this release with the Riser file system), eliminates the need for time-consuming file system consistency verification on reboots. (This feature contributes to increased server availability.)

There was also a brief discussion of desktop environments and gnome in specific.    Don mentioned that he had been been pleasantly surprised with capabilities of easel/nautilus

Klaus mentioned some ideas he is interested in working on that will help LUGIE build membership, and perhaps provide study group opportunities that meet on an alternate schedule.   We decided to research that possibility and to explore some of the most promising ideas.

The meeting was a great success, and we are all looking forward to our next session on August 11th, 2001
